A photo collage of some handmade bowls created on the pottery wheel titled: what I made this week

What I made this week...

Hiya lovely human,

I thought in this week’s blog post, I’d give you a little update on what I’m currently working on and what my pottery plans are for the rest of the week.

So last week I was busy painting some of my bisque fired pieces (this is after their first firing, all my ceramics go through two firings) and have been playing around a lot with my dark blue underglaze. I am falling in love with this blue and white colour theme I’ve been experimenting with recently. I finished painting my little tumbler set earlier this week and am quite pleased with the results so far, what do you think?

I’m also close to finishing one of my large mugs. I used a bouquet of flowers for inspiration whilst painting this piece and played around a lot with mixing my underglaze colours together to ca wider range of tones and shades. I usually go with a black outline for my artwork, but I thought I’d take a risk with this mug and try using a dark blue outline. So far, I’m quite happy with the effect, and feel it gives the outline a bit of a softer feel than the black.

I’ve been filming my painting process for this mug and will be sharing videos on my YouTube over the coming weeks. I’m going to do a little miniseries for my YouTube Shorts and plan to do a full-length video of the painting process from start to finish soon. If you’ve not already, head over to my YouTube channel and hit subscribe so you don’t miss out on any of my videos!

I finished up last week on my pottery wheel. I threw some small trinket bowls on my wheel which were a completely new shape I hadn’t thrown before so was a little unsure how it would go. But I was pleased with the style and shape. It can be so satisfying when you manage to turn the idea into a reality, especially as the image in my brain doesn’t always translate as planned into clay!

After I left the bowls overnight to dry out, so they were leather hard, I then put them back on my pottery wheel and trimmed the bases. I decided to finish them off by adding a small ornamental swirl to the centre of the base.

I have spent the last few days editing this week’s YouTube video which will be a vlog style behind the scenes of me throwing and trimming these bowls form start to finish! I’m excited to share it with you as it is the first video I have created in this style and my aim with my channel is to create vlog style videos that allow my audience to get a true understanding of my creative process through more meaningful content.  It will be going LIVE on my channel on Sunday so keep your eye out for when it's available to watch.

My plan for the rest of the week is to mainly focus on painting my bisque ware pieces. I spent some time on the weekend batch painting the white base colour on several pots so that I can start painting my designs on them this week. I’m going to experiment more with the blue style that I painted my small tumbler set in and to just have fun and see where my imagination takes me!

That’s all from me for now, but I’ll be back soon with more updates and art.

Sending love your way,

Maz x
